When it comes to healthy skin, there is one little detail that often gets overlooked: pH.
You may have heard that skincare products should have a “skin-friendly pH”, but what does that actually mean? And why does it matter?
Understanding pH can help you make better choices for your skincare routine.
What exactly is pH?
pH is a measurement of how acidic or alkaline something is.
The pH scale runs from 0 to 14:
Below 7 = acidic
7 = neutral
Above 7 = alkaline
Your skin naturally has a slightly acidic surface pH, often referred to as the acid mantle. This mildly acidic environment plays an important role in maintaining the skin’s natural barrier and supporting the microorganisms that naturally live on our skin.
Think of it as part of your skin’s own protective environment.
Why does skincare products pH matter?
The products you apply to your skin interact with this environment. A product that is very far from the skin’s natural pH may not be the most comfortable choice for regular use and, depending on the formulation, can contribute to dryness, tightness or irritation.
That doesn’t mean every product needs to have exactly the same pH as your skin. Different products are formulated differently, and their ingredients often determine the pH range they need to work properly.
Good formulation is about finding the right balance between the ingredients, the product’s purpose, preservation system and skin compatibility. It’s not simply about having a ‘low’ pH.
You may see products marked as ‘low pH’ and assume that lower must automatically mean better. Not necessarily.
A product that is too acidic can also be irritating. And some ingredients require a particular pH range to remain stable, effective or properly preserved.
So rather than looking for the lowest possible pH, it’s more useful to ask: Is this product appropriately formulated for what it is designed to do?
Cleansers are particularly interesting because cleansing itself can temporarily affect the skin’s surface environment. A well formulated cleanser should remove dirt, excess oils, makeup and impurities without unnecessarily disrupting the skin’s natural protective barrier. And that’s why gentle cleansing is such an important part of healthy skincare.
What happens when the skin’s balance is disrupted?
Things such as harsh cleansing, excessive exfoliation, environmental exposure and unsuitable products can place stress on the skin barrier.
When the barrier is compromised, skin may feel: tight or uncomfortable, dry or rough, more sensitive than usual, easily irritated, and less comfortable with products that were previously fine.
This is why skincare isn’t simply about adding more and more products.
Sometimes supporting your skin means doing less – but choosing better!
What about active ingredients?
pH becomes particularly important when you’re working with certain active ingredients. Ingredients such as salicylic acid, niacinamide and vitamin C derivatives each have their own formulation considerations.
A properly formulated product considers the entire formula – not just one impressive ingredient.
At Flawless Earth, our approach is centered around supporting healthy skin rather than chasing quick fixes.

And sometimes, the best skincare routine is the one that gently supports what your skin is already designed to do.
